* Especially for families I have not yet met, the pre-session home consult is a great way to determine the kind of photos you like and what you plan to do with the photos we create. We can talk about the options available for displaying your images. We can talk in person about clothes for the session, location options, scheduling issues, props and activities. This is also when payment is due. No charge if the session has to be re-scheduled. Pre-session consultation is also available over the phone.
NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW! NEW!
As of June 2013, I'm offering the $500, $300, and $100 packages. This is a new business approach - which - in some ways - reverts back to my original business model.
In 2008, after much study and practice, I took my photography beyond providing free pictures for family and friends to setting up a business model that included: an hour photo shoot, a disk of images, and a 20 page book of images - all for $150. About a year later, my price went up to $300 as I faced the reality of how much time I was spending. Soon I was moving in "pro circles" and discovered pros rarely give away image files on disk, and if they ever do, they charge a LOT. Doing so, I was told, would mean losing control of how my images were printed and undermine the profession .
Eventually, I developed a plan that for $225 included a pre-session meeting, an hour photo session, and a post-session image review when prints were purchased. No files were included. Although my print prices were in the middle of the professional range, they were still expensive. This was my model for the last couple of years.
So why am I changing again? People want digital files for all kinds of uses including social media, slideshows, holiday cards, invitations, art projects, and of course prints and photo books. Even with the likelihood that most families are taking lots of snapshots these days, many do not have the expertise to take and process them in a professional manner. That's where I come in - when you want heirloom level captures that you can love and cherish forever and even pass down to future generations. When I ask myself if I can do what I love for less, I say yes, because, fortunately, I am not depending upon what I make as a photographer to live. Believe me, photographers who make a living photographing people are justified in charging higher rates. They are running very costly businesses.
I really enjoy pre-session consults, and that's why I'm including them in my $500 package. It's valuable to encourage a family to think about what kind of photos they want and what they will do with them once they're created. There's a big difference between wanting a canvas portrait of your family to display on a particular wall and wanting a photo book for your coffee table full of family moments. Most families want sessions at beaches or parks, or sometimes their own homes.
